Summary

Dark and mysterious, suspenseful. An Act of Self Defense weaves desperate lives together in a howl of punk rock and drug-drenched angst. Like the writings of Raymond Carver and the 1993 movie Short Cuts, a cast of deeply damaged characters hurt themselves and each other, for their own reasons and all suffering miserably alone, sharing pain and yearning for tenderness in the fallout of existential hopelessness and beaten, shattered ennui. Gripping and beautiful, lyrical words empower horrifying imagery. As a character contemplates suicide, Verongos writes, "She wouldn't be lost and forgotten by the cosmos, she would be folded in the arms of the stars, she would be absorbed by the laws of the universe." In visions of euphoria, "They navigated the sea of iridescent blue teenagers all tinted the same hue by the dye of a starless night." This is "a thick slice of soft light," ... "a frozen frame from a catastrophic explosion, silent and still." Conversations are vivid, "witty repartee peppered with teen lingo banter." Honest and heartrending scenes hurdle us toward the thrilling finale. And though the characters are dependent young adults, An Act of Self Defense is bold and fearless fiction. It should carry a "Parental Advisory - Explicit Content" warning, as a dare to the timid, a beacon to those who will love it.
